Denefoot Co.

This week our small business feature is on Denefoot Co.

Denefoot Co. is owned by Simone Smith who lives in Canada with her four-month old daughter. She is of the Piikani Nation in southern Alberta, that are a part of the Blackfoot people and she is also part Dene'tha from northern Alberta. Her tribal heritage is what inspired the name for her company. Denefoot Co. specializes in making First Nation items available and accessible to everyone. Simone aims to bridge the cultural gap by sharing her tribal items with everyone.

Aside from baby items, she has three years of experience in the fashion industry and has had four shows feature her women's wear. Her baby items were inspired by her daughter since there aren't a lot of baby tribal items in the area that she lives in. She hand beads items in addition to making bandana bibs. The girl's bibs have ribbon ties and the boy's bibs had velcro straps which is a neat feature for both.

We had the opportunity to shoot a headband and bandana bib made by Simone. She hand beaded the border on the headband (around the flower gem) as well as the beading in the center. It is all hand sewn onto leather, then sewn onto the headband. The bib is reversible which is a cool feature. I didn't think my daughter would be interested in wearing a bib, but I was wrong! She loved it and was upset when I took it off. Both items are made well and my daughter loves them, she calls the headband her "crown"...too cute.
