Footless Footies Tutorial

My 14 MO is new to walking and he slips and slides all over our bathroom and kitchen floor in his "grippy" footie pajamas. I recently unpacked his 18 mo pajamas (mostly from Carters--gifted to us) and I found that the grips are a joke (and the pj's were too long- this solves the length problem). They don't really grip that well and he is so wiggly that getting his feet in the foot area is a hassle. So I decided Down With the Footies! and here is the tutorial. It is super easy and can be done in just a few minutes. I promise.

The Culprit

Good bye slippery footies!

Step 1: See the elastic? You want to keep it. Just keep an eye on it while you cut so that it doesn't disappear or mistakenly get taken out. You'll be sewing your new raw edge above it.

Step 2: Turn your pj's like this so that you can see where the "foot" part starts. Pin it so you know where to cut. You want between 1/2"-1" allowance below the elastic.

Step 3:Here is the back view of that pin. I had about 3/4" allowance below that elastic (it will vary on the brand of PJ).Cut below it.

Step 4: See this tab at the end of the zippered side? Cut it out.

Yes, that tab can go. You won't be able to sew over it.

Step 5: Flip the leg inside-out so that you can fold over and pin your raw edge so that it fits over the elastic. Flip it back to the right side out and sew along the edge, giving yourself 1/2" allowance.

Tada! The zippered side can get a little tricky, so go slow. You can see my seam dip a little because I didn't cut low enough back in step 3, be ye warned. If you have to cut into the foot to allow enough length, then do so.

Here's the happy guy in his footless pajamas!
