As a mom of two I sometimes struggle being creative or always healthy with our snacks. I searched for some more nutritious ideas and here is what I came up with!
Fruit :) This is one of the friendliest kid snacks out there. The nice thing is that it changes seasonally so you won't get bored of the same old fruit. Another fun variation is to make fruit kabobs with a yogurt dipping sauce. Fruit kabobs are one of my party go-to dishes.
Veggies -- there are a lot of fun ways to dress up veggies so they appeal to your kids more. Here are just a couple of ideas (the picture links to where we found the idea). Veggie cups with hummus at the bottom is a great way to make veggies fun. Another fun option would be veggie kabobs with cherry tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, etc. Veggie boats are something I have never tried but they look great.
Cheese and Crackers -- not too original, but if you swap out the cracker with a whole grain cracker (Triscuit, wheat Ritz, wheat thins, etc) then it makes it healthier for your kiddos.
Veggie/fruit infused baked goods -- zucchini muffins, whole wheat banana bread/muffins, black bean brownies, beet whoopie pies, etc. We make the banana muffins and black bean brownies and they are always a hit!
Smoothies & homemade fruit popsicles-- sometimes I forget how great and easy it can be to make smoothies/popsicles. They are a great cool treat and I can pack them full of greek yogurt, fruit, and even veggies (sweet potatoes, spinach, kale). For the smoothies I like to freeze soy milk and use that in place of ice cubes, just for a protein boost. In popsicles you can add chunks of fruit and even puree fruit to freeze instead of using juice.
Nuts & granola -- making granola and packing it full of nuts is much healthier than store bought granola bars. You could even make homemade trail mix with dried fruit and nuts.
I love carbs just as much as the next guy, so here are some healthier snack options that will satisfy your carb cravings. Veggie bars-- I would modify this recipe and make a ranch dip from greek yogurt instead of cream cheese and mayo. Homemade mini pizzas are another great option for a snack where you can completely control what goes on the pizza. Microwave potato chips (or sweet potato chips/kale chips/apple chips), banana quesadillas, or wheat pita chips with hummus are more good options.
This list could go on forever, but here are some of the sites I used to find these recipes:
